Driving Theory Guide
Speed Limits
| Location | Speed |
| Built-up area | Inside 50 km/h |
| Outside | 80 km/h |
| Motorway | 130 km/h |
| Expressway | 80 km/h |
Speed Reduction Situations
- Unmanageable intersection
- Unmanageable swing
- Unmanageable pedestrian crossing
- Unmanageable hill
- Meeting on narrow road
- Level crossing
- Running, playful and cycling children
- If you have reduced traction
- If you have reduced visibility
Who Can Drive What?
| Vehicle | Speed Limit |
| Bus | 80 km/h (highway) |
| Lorry | 70 km/h (80 km/h highway) |
| Car with trailer | 70 km/h (80 km/h highway) |
| Tractor | 30 km/h |
Spiritus (Alcohol)
- If not involved in accidents: 0.50‰
- If involved in accidents: 0.00‰
You should never transfer the right to drive to someone intoxicated. Medicine can be just as dangerous as liquor.
Road Conditions
- Course of the road: Places with impaired orientation or less space.
- Use of the road: Watch for shopping streets, parking streets.
- Surroundings of the road: Anything on the side making driving harder.
- Road equipment: Extra care for pedestrians and cyclists.
- Type of road: Roads with their own rules or driving styles.
Pay Special Attention?
- Course of the road: Uphill, turns, intersections, railways, roundabouts, narrow roads, pedestrian crossings.
- Road use: School, shopping streets, sports centers, busy streets, warning signs for children, bus stops.
- Surroundings: Trees, wet roads, leaves, lakes/sea, soil, residential streets.
- Road equipment: Pavement, cycle path, striping, pedestrian crossings, pedestrian bridges.
- Road type: Motorway, expressway, main road, road with speed reduction, play/seating area, pedestrian street.
Overtaking
- Always on the left, except if the vehicle in front swerves left (watch bike lane on right).
- Overtaking ban:
- Before or at level crossing
- Before or in pedestrian crossing (exceptions if 100% clear view + 1m each side)
- Uphill (2 lanes with double barrier exception)
- Unmanageable turns (2 lanes with double barrier exception)
- Before or at intersections (side roads have unconditional right-of-way)
Giving Way
- Unconditional right-of-way: Hold back for drivers from both left and right (Shark teeth or STOP sign).
- Right-of-way: Hold back for drivers from the right if no unconditional right-of-way exists.
- You have a right-of-way obligation if no one has unconditional right-of-way.
Stopping & Parking
Stopping: Voluntary provision of vehicle < 3 min.
Parking: Voluntary provision of vehicle > 3 min.
- Do not park closer than 30 m from railway crossings, gates, other cars, hills, turns, pre-pedestrian crossings, cycle paths, junctions, tunnels, taxi ranks, bus stops, opposite roadside unless one-way.
Police Theory Test Topics
- Foot to brake when starting.
- Slow down near children or elderly.
- Brake or stop if danger present.
- Reduced traction: Snow, ice, water, soil, wet leaves.
- Pay attention to pedestrians and cyclists.
Driving Technique
- Brakes: Pedal should not sink; vacuum booster may allow slight movement after equalization; fluid between min & max.
- Steering: Wheel should respond correctly; power steering checked with engine running; fluid between min & max.
- Lamps & Horns: All lamps clean, functional, visible in sunlight; direction indicators yellow; horn clear and constant.
- Engine & Exhaust: No smoke, no leaks; oil and coolant correct levels.
- Load-bearing parts: Tires ≥ 1.6mm; shock absorbers effective.
Traffic Violations
- Exceeding speed limit > 30%
- Driving too close
- Illegal emergency lane use
- Not strapping children under 15
- Running red lights
- Violating right-of-way or overtaking rules
- Driving against traffic
- Reckless driving or racing
- New drivers: 2 offenses in 3 years → driving ban
